Oppo, please feel free to tell me why I am wrong/stupid/otherwise misinformed. But I think the Z06 is the ideal final car to shoot for horsepower whore like myself, but still want to turn once in a while.
And not spend 6 figures, just mid 5s.
Edit: T hanks for all the opinions and have a happy Friday.

The Z06 overheats at the track, but only used vettes make it to the track so that’s a problem for the next owner.

Would you track it often? If not the C7 Grand Sport is a better choice. Every single review sings its praise and says it is the more balanced choice.
I am personally biased towards a good ol’murrican V8 but I have driven neither so i can only speak hypothetically. My 2 cents.

GM needs to redo the front grill and cooling for the c7 z06... just a quiet refresh to tighten up the lines, open up the airflow and keep the that monster cool.

Just avoid the 2016’s. They are pretty infamous for not having enough cooling capacity and overheating quickly when pushed. I believe the 2017 and newer fixed it.

Buy a Grand S port instead and put the saved money toward an aftermarket turbo or SC system or just buy more tires and track days.

As I understand it, the parts are also available for previous year Z06s. I’d do extra cooling regardless of whether or not Chevy made those available , it seems like there would be 3rd party options for that too.

I love V8s and I want to keep owning V8s. The use profile is, some track days but mostly driving around semi-spiritedly on back roads, and some DD. call it 20 % 40% 40% respectively.
Considered the Z51 or the Grand Sport, too. But I kind of want more hp.

Those have 450hp, I haven’t met anyone at the track who needed more horsepower or felt that a C7 needed more power.
My last set of track tires cost me $640 all-in (including mounting and shipping), the same set of tires for a Corvette is over $1300.
If you increase your track percentage, a BRZ is a great car:
A 2015 BRZ goes for about $18k, and there are a couple of great supercharger kits that go for $6 k-$7 k installed. At around 300whp and 2700lbs, a supercharged BRZ/FRS keeps up with the vettes at a much lower entry and upkeep price. In my NA BRZ I can hang with the Corvettes with intermediate drivers (I’ve got to drive the wheels off my BRZ, but I can do it), the supercharged twins are as fast as the C6 Z06 and C7 Stingrays.

I know it is one gen older, but I really liked my dad’s 2002. It was not a Z06 but had been upgraded to the same HP. With a 6 speed it was a LOT of fun.

I have an IS-F right now which I could put on a diet or add some mods too, and it goes through cones ok. Which is why I hadn’t considered the BR-Z although the car really is a different design philosophy and I’m sure would tear it up on a track in that config.
Edit: at this point we’ve gone pretty far beyond need

I am thinking C6 Z06s as well. If I can find one with that rather rare Z 07 package. I have a soft spot for the C5s as they are very special but it’s not my preferred choice at this time.

In the secondhand market, you could also shoot for things like the 997 and 991. Plenty of power (although not as much as a Vette) and sharp handling.
But I suspect a Vette will be simpler to maintain due to a much more spacious engine bay.

My experience driving a Z06:
* Climbs in, gets comfy. Presses start button.*
Car: *Roars to life with a growl and pleasantly aggressive rumble*
Me: *giggles like a school girl*
Nuff said.

The IS-F I drive right now was my first V8 car.
I pushed the button and the V8 roared. I test drove other cars but the salesman knew I was going to buy, it was so damn obvious.
I’d like to keep feeling that way with a GM small block. Only with a 0-60 of 3 seconds.

I endorse this view. I think the Grand Sport might be a better value, but that’s not really a compelling argument for a true hp whore.
My personal choice would be a Stingray with the Z51 package.

I also agree the Grand Sport would be a better value. Originally I was thinking Z51 Stingray myself. But I have 400 hp now.

I doubled my all time hp max with my current car. I’m at 420, and it’s scary how quickly I’ve become used to it. Granted it’s in a luxury sedan, but still. It’s kind of intoxicating.

I think that if you like power, the corvette is a good choice, it’s quite a good handling car, I’ve read.
But, something tells me that the Cayman GTS will hold it’s value better, specially if it’s kept in a good state.
If I had 7 0k burning a hole through my pocket I’d get a stinger GT and a ND Miata though. I don’t track cars.

If you are only doing autox, the twins are about the best autox car you can have. They are competitive in STX and have their own spec class SSC and both allow for a great track/auto/dd build (my BRZ is in STX trim and it’s my autox/track/dd with 25 autox, 20 trackdays, and about 12k miles per year).
The 1000lb difference between the IS-F and twins has about the same shift in feel as you’d get going to a Corvette from your L exus.
I love the C7 (the Z06 and its issues would make me go for a GS or Z51), the tire cost is the only factor keeping me out of one (I’m going through 4-5 sets per year and the C7's would cost me another $6 k -$8k per year in tires alone).
I also like the idea of an Evora S or a Cayman S, they’d be cheaper on tires than a C7 and there isn’t much room between the 3 in the performance category.
You just gotta figure out where your priorities lie, and which characteristics are the most important for you. For me, I want to maximize seat time and minimize cost with a competent autox and track build. I can’t justify the tire budget for the V8's, so if I couldn’t be in my BRZ or had to pick a different car I’d go with a Cayman S or 997 with the Evora S as the wildcard (depending on availability/pricing) and why I’m not in my BRZ.

I think what you are saying is legit. I work from home, so I don’t drive much as I used to. I also work a lot, so I don't get much track time or even cone time. I do use sports cars as dailies because I feel cars should be driven. I’ve driven several 300 hp cars at varying weights of 3000-3500 and the delta V availability was not enough.
Therefore I want a powerful car that CAN track but also give me the grins when someone in front of me merges onto a 75 highway at 50 and I have to merge in myself. I also love those 7/10 drives through the mountains and I need a car that will get me through the turns, but also won’t piss my wife off if she’s riding with.
I have found that under 400 hp simply won’t do any longer, and I find myself craving more. If this was about maximizing track time, I’d probably go a wholly different route.
